What is Vitiligo?Vitiligo is a condition in which the pigments are lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches on the skin. It is due to abnormality of melanin producing cells called melanocytes (special skin producing colour pigments). The white patches often change shape , shrink or grow. They may even remain constant throughout the life. The extent and rate of colour loss from Vitiligo is unpredictable but it usually appears on sun-exposed area, such as hands, feet, arms, face and lips. It can affect any skin type or any part of the body including hair as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that lines the inside part of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal area and the retina of the eyes.It is non contagious disorder and does not affect any internal organs of the body but having a great social stigma and is stressful for the patients.Generally it affects 1 to 1.5% of the world population. But in India it is around 1.5 to 2% of population. Vitiligo affects all races and both sexes equally and maximum cases below the age of 40.Important Message:The most important thing is to start the treatment by the specialized doctor as soon as one notices the first patch. If Ayurvedic treatment is started at this initial stage by an expert doctor then it can arrest further spread, gets cured and generally doesn’t relapses. It is observed that patient gets misguided by general doctors who gives temporary suppressing treatment including steroids which disturbs the internal mechanism of body and in due course of time the disease flares up making it difficult to treat. It is advised to the patients that they should stick to one pathy at a time. One should not try two pathies for same disease like Allopathy and Ayurveda, Homeopathy etc as it may interact with each other and can complicate the disease.

Healing patches by eliminating root causeCauses Of VitiligoThe precise cause of Vitiligo is complex and not fully understood. There are several theories regarding the cause of Vitiligo. According to one theory people with Vitiligo develop antibodies that turn upon them and destroy their own melanocytes instead of protecting them. There is another theory according to which the melanocytes somehow attack and destroy themselves.According to Modern view there are some factors responsible for Vitiligo:Autoimmune related:- a condition whereby the immune system of body destroys its own tissues and cells. Some diseases like hyperthyroidism, perinicious anaemia, alopecia areata are related to Vitiligo.Genetic cause:-It is 30% heriditary. Generally it passes on third generation.Hormonal cause :-Some hormones are responsible for Vitiligo like melanocyte stimulating hormone, thyroid hormone.Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D deficiency.Impaired liver function as jaundice, gastric disorder, typhoid fever.Excessive use of antibiotics or medicine.Pressure or friction of tight clothes, undergarments, etcExcessive sun exposure or exposed with industrial chemicals.According to AyurvedaIn Ayurveda, Vitiligo is known as ‘SHWITRA’ or ‘KILASA’ – the appearance of a patch on skin with white coloration. In Ayurveda we believe that there is a great role of diet in the causative factor and also treatment of this problem. In Ayurveda it has been said that certain food articles are never to be mixed while eating that can cause harmful effect to your body, thus said to be ‘Viruddha-Ahar’ . Viruddha-Ahar meaning opposite food combination. For instance fish and milk, milk and salt, milk and banana, milk with sour fruits, milk with yogurt. These are opposite food combinations which taken together can produce slow poison in our body.Stressful event disturbs your Manovoha strotas (Mental state) and due to that mechanism, Annavaha strotas (Digestive System) is altered resulting into forming toxins. It can trigger Vitiligo.

There are several theories about types of Vitiligo. It can be divided according to the pattern and onset area or place of white patches in body.Vitiligo is basically of following two types:Segmental Vitiligo: Segmental Vitiligo shows symptoms at an early age and affect one segment or one side of the body (like a hand, a leg). Symptoms progress for only few years and may also appear on head, scalp, eyes etc.Non-segmental Vitiligo: It is a more common form of Vitiligo that starts with a short-lives burst of discoloration on hands, feet or face and later on affects both sides of the body. This is followed by new cycles of pigment loss throughout the person’s life. Also depending upon the extent of pigment loss, Vitiligo can be:Localized- characterized by a few patches on skin.Generalized- characterized by scattered patches throughout the body areas like eyes, bone joints temples, waist areas etc.Universal- characterized by loss of pigment over major parts of body. Many; a times, one or more forms of Vitiligo can be found simultaneously in a patient.

How to ascertain that you are under right treatment?Vitiligo, a condition that causes the loss of skin pigment, can be effectively managed through Ayurveda. Unlike conventional treatments that may provide only temporary relief, Ayurveda focuses on addressing the root cause of the condition. By balancing the body’s doshas and improving overall immunity, Ayurvedic treatments aim for long-term and sustainable recovery. Choosing the right treatment for Vitiligo is crucial for achieving lasting results. Many people struggle with ineffective treatments, leading to frustration and prolonged suffering. To ensure that you are receiving the right Ayurvedic care, you should monitor certain key parameters that indicate progress. Key Indicators of Effective Vitiligo Treatment:Visible Improvements in 6-8 Weeks:Within the first few weeks of Ayurvedic treatment, you should notice signs of repigmentation in the affected areas. The patches may begin to shrink or show a return of natural skin color.Halting of Vitiligo Spread:If your Vitiligo is actively spreading, an effective treatment should stop its progression within a few weeks.A stable condition indicates that the treatment is working at the root level.Reduction of Itching and Discomfort:Some individuals experience mild itching in the affected areas. If the treatment is suitable, itching (if present) should subside within two weeks.Persistent discomfort or worsening symptoms may suggest the need for adjustments in treatment.Seamless Skin Tone Integration:Repigmentation should not appear patchy but should gradually blend into your natural skin tone. This merging process should be visible within a few weeks. No Flare-Ups After Pausing Treatment:A true Ayurvedic cure ensures that even if treatment is paused for a short time, Vitiligo should not flare up or spread again. If stopping the medication causes a sudden worsening, the treatment may not be addressing the root cause effectively. No Harmful Side Effects:Ayurvedic treatments rely on natural herbs and holistic approaches, ensuring there are no side effects. If you experience any adverse reactions, reassessing the treatment plan is essential.

Nurturing your skin naturallyVitiligo (Leukoderma) in AyurvedaAccording to Ayurveda, Vitiligo is known as SHWITRA or Shweta kushta or Kilas. It occurs due to imbalance of all the three doshas namely Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These three doshas vitiates Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda and Majja dhatu. Hence it is termed as Tridoshaja.According to Ayurveda the main causative factors are Viruddha-Ahar (food incompability), excessive mental stress or worries. These lead to formation and accumulation of toxins in our body and malfunctioning of body’s immunity. Both these factors destroys melanocytes and can cause appearance of white patches on the various parts of body.Treatment is given to pacify the imbalanced body energies, cleanse the blood and restore its color. Ayurveda considers poor digestion to be the main root cause of this disease. Improper digestion causes the build-up of toxins in the tissues and blood. This leads to depigmentation. So the most important part of ayurvedic treatment is to restore digestion by following diet and lifestyle guidelines. In addition to this, proper assessment of the causative factor is also important, that should be managed by appropriate Ayurvedic treatment. That is why Ayurvedic treatment of white patches is based on improvement of immunity and rectification of the problem from root.Vitiligo (Leukoderma) Treatment in AyurvedaOwing to dedication of 14 years exclusively on Vitiligo, Dr. Sneha Rathi of GASC has been able to device novel way for very effective and result oriented treatment to provide smile to thousands of Vitiligo patients not in India but other parts of the world.Following factors are considered for Treatment plan:Age of patientSite of Vitiligo patchWhether the patch is stable or spreadingIs itching present or notPast medication historyPresent illnessColour of patchAt Gurumaa Ayurvedic skin clinic the treatment includes internal and external treatment.Internal TreatmentAfter proper examining the patient is given various herbal combination to remove the toxins, from intestinal track for proper digestion of food and improves the absorption of medicine, essential vitamins and minerals.Purifies the blood and stops the disease from spreading.Works on Manovaha strotas for releiving stress.Regularize vitiated dosha in body that is responsible for spreading the disease.Strengthens the immune system.External TreatmentAfter few weeks of treatment with the herbal medicines of GASC, squeezing of white patches starts. In some cases squeezing/compression/shrinking of the patches starts from the periphery of a patch.Visible change in skin colour appears as the area converts darker along the periphery of patches and the darker skin area formed by medicines gradually covers all the white/pale skin area resulting in closing of a patch, which later mixes up with normal skin. While in some cases small darker spots appear on the mid of white patches. Gradually, these darker spots spread and cover the entire area of a white patch converting the patch area into normal skin.In some cases the patch area converts pink/pale in colour in the beginning which later mixes with normal skin colour by getting darker.Pranayam is advised daily morning to release stress and improve blood cirulation.Important Message:The most important thing is to start the treatment by the specialized doctor as soon as one notices the first patch.
