What is Vitiligo?Vitiligo is a condition in which the pigments are lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches on the skin. It is due to abnormality of melanin producing cells called melanocytes (special skin producing colour pigments).The white patches often change shape , shrink or grow. They may even remain constant throughout the life. The extent and rate of colour loss from Vitiligo is unpredictable but it usually appears on sun-exposed area, such as hands, feet, arms, face and lips. It can affect any skin type or any part of the body including hair as well as the tissues (mucous membranes) that lines the inside part of the mouth, nose, genital and rectal area and the retina of the eyes.It is non contagious disorder and does not affect any internal organs of the body but having a great social stigma and is stressful for the patients.Generally it affects 1 to 1.5% of the world population. But in India it is around 1.5 to 2% of population. Vitiligo affects all races and both sexes equally and maximum cases below the age of 40.Important Message:The most important thing is to start the treatment by the specialized doctor as soon as one notices the first patch.If Ayurvedic treatment is started at this initial stage by an expert doctor then it can arrest further spread, gets cured and generally doesn’t relapses.It is observed that patient gets misguided by general doctors who gives temporary suppressing treatment including steroids which disturbs the internal mechanism of body and in due course of time the disease flares up making it difficult to treat.It is advised to the patients that they should stick to one pathy at a time. One should not try two pathies for same disease like Allopathy and Ayurveda, Homeopathy etc as it may interact with each other and can complicate the disease.

What is Vitiligo ?

Symptoms of VitiligoThe main sign of Vitiligo is pigment loss that produces milky white patches on your skin. Some common sign may include:It starts with small white spots or skin discoloration.Loss of colour in the mucous membranes (inner lining of mouth, nose).Loss of change in colour in the inner layer of eye (retina).Although any part of your body may get affected by Vitiligo but these patches are more common in area where skin is exposed to the sun, The patches may be on the hands, feets, arms, face and lips. Other common area for white patch are:On body folds (armpit, groin etc).Places that have been injured in the past.Around moles or body openings.Around eyelids and hair. Diagnosis of VitiligoVitiligo can be easily diagnosed by complete history of the patient and physical check up. Following tests are also helpful in diagnosing Vitiligo:Skin biopsy is a confirmatory test for Vitiligo.Wood lamp examination.Blood tests to rule out other disorders or to find associated disorders.Eye examination to check for inflammation in eye (uveitis).

Healing patches by eliminating root causeCauses Of VitiligoThe precise cause of Vitiligo is complex and not fully understood. There are several theories regarding the cause of Vitiligo. According to one theory people with Vitiligo develop antibodies that turn upon them and destroy their own melanocytes instead of protecting them. There is another theory according to which the melanocytes somehow attack and destroy themselves.According to Modern view there are some factors responsible for Vitiligo:Autoimmune related:- a condition whereby the immune system of body destroys its own tissues and cells. Some diseases like hyperthyroidism, perinicious anaemia, alopecia areata are related to Vitiligo.Genetic cause:-It is 30% heriditary. Generally it passes on third generation.Hormonal cause :-Some hormones are responsible for Vitiligo like melanocyte stimulating hormone, thyroid hormone.Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D deficiency.Impaired liver function as jaundice, gastric disorder, typhoid fever.Excessive use of antibiotics or medicine.Pressure or friction of tight clothes, undergarments, etcExcessive sun exposure or exposed with industrial chemicals.According to AyurvedaIn Ayurveda, Vitiligo is known as ‘SHWITRA’ or ‘KILASA’ – the appearance of a patch on skin with white coloration.In Ayurveda we believe that there is a great role of diet in the causative factor and also treatment of this problem. In Ayurveda it has been said that certain food articles are never to be mixed while eating that can cause harmful effect to your body, thus said to be ‘Viruddha-Ahar’ . Viruddha-Ahar meaning opposite food combination. For instance fish and milk, milk and salt, milk and banana, milk with sour fruits, milk with yogurt. These are opposite food combinations which taken together can produce slow poison in our body.Stressful event disturbs your Manovoha strotas (Mental state) and due to that mechanism, Annavaha strotas (Digestive System) is altered resulting into forming toxins. It can trigger Vitiligo.
